Plain-language policy

Cookie Policy

What git-universe stores in your browser, and why. It is a short list: one cookie to keep you signed in, a few values the game remembers on your own device, and analytics that do not use cookies at all.

What a cookie is here

A cookie is a small file a site stores in your browser. This policy also covers the two closely related things git-universe uses more of: localStorage and sessionStorage, which keep small values on your own device without ever being sent to a server. They are listed here because from your point of view they are the same kind of thing.

Strictly necessary: staying signed in

Signing in with GitHub sets a session cookie so the app knows the browser is still you on the next request. Without it you would be signed out on every page load, so it is not optional and there is nothing to consent to. It is removed when you sign out or when it expires.

On your device only: game preferences

git-universe keeps a handful of values in localStorage so the game remembers small things between visits: whether you have dismissed the captain tutorial, whether you have seen the pilot controls hint, whether the ship-commissioned reveal has played, and which scene you were last in. One sessionStorage value stops a Stardust-arrival banner showing twice on a refresh. These never leave your browser, and clearing your site data resets them with no other effect.

Analytics, without cookies

We use Vercel Web Analytics and Speed Insights to see which pages are used and how fast they load. They are cookieless: they set no cookie, build no cross-site profile, and are not used for advertising. We do not use Google Analytics, advertising pixels, or any third-party tracker that follows you between sites.

Payments

Card details are entered on Stripe's own hosted checkout page, on Stripe's domain. Stripe sets its own cookies there for fraud prevention and to make checkout work, under Stripe's policies rather than ours. git-universe never receives your card details.

Your choices

You can clear or block cookies and site data in your browser at any time. Blocking the session cookie means you cannot stay signed in; clearing local storage means the game forgets tutorial dismissals and your last scene. Nothing else about your account is affected, your systems, inventory and purchases live on the server, not in your browser.
